Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Looking to get some feedback from MVSHRM members and the business community on what’s going on in your organizations, so we can start to tailor our content to your needs.
- How do you define Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in your organization?
- What DE&I hurdles have you encountered?
- What positively differentiates your organization from others, in terms of DE&I? (i.e. best practices, policies, etc.…)
Have you held any Diversity events for your organization? And do you have a preferred vendor you use for events/training?

1. How do you define Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in your organization? Our company has only just begun to formally address Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in an organized manner. Our local community is rural-oriented so many of the topics relating to DEI are not often associated as such. That said, much of our workforce are familiar with or come from varying socio-economic backgrounds. In current-day efforts, our attention is shifting toward education and exposure on topics of gender & sexuality as well as race & ethnicity. 2. What DE&I hurdles have you encountered? I happen to chair a new DEI advisory committee for our company and the biggest challenge I feel we face is a lack of resources & buy-in. Currently our committee is made up of volunteer employees with an executive liaison, and we are asked to perform all committee duties on our own time (i.e. outside of work hours). While we have a passionate team of volunteers, these restraints really slow down our efforts. Furthermore, we are only an advisory committee, so we have no authority to enact any of our initiatives – simply provide proposals to leadership. 3. What positively differentiates your organization from others, in terms of DE&I? (i.e. best practices, policies, etc.…) As we are only beginning to thoughtfully address Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, I would not say there is not much that sets us apart at this time. That said, I do see lots of exciting opportunities for growth and understanding on our horizon. Our community has a refreshingly diverse makeup of folks on the gender & sexuality spectrum. In addition, we neighbor an indigenous people’s reservation I hope to foster and improve our relationship with through initiatives like our DEI group as well as company recruitment incentive opportunities.

We are in the very early stages of DEI gathering information and researching providers for this type of training. Knowing that our employee base will grow and expecting it to become more diverse due to more intentional remote hiring plans, the need for a DEI strategy as well as policies and procedures will be important to our long-term success. I look forward to learning from other members what they are doing related to this topic. Thank you!
